Purpose
The purpose of our band program is to serve as a creative outlet for all students who wish to participate in music. At the same time, our band serves the community, school, and the student body through its public performances.
Performance
As music is a performance art we strive to perform to the best of our ability and as often as possible. Attendance at all performances is mandatory! Our band is a team in which every musician counts. We all need to be there in order achieve quality performances. If an absence is unavoidable please follow these procedures:
Unexcused absences from a mandatory performance will result in a failing grade!!!
There are two formal concerts and four parades throughout the school year. In addition to these, more performances may be scheduled in the community or for competitions/field trips.

Honors Ensembles
Student may participate in our honors ensembles by teacher permission only. We will be looking for students who practice regularly, have a good work ethic in class and who perform at a high level. Most rehearsal for these ensembles will occur during the school day but as concerts approach we will have after school rehearsals as well.
Chamber Groups- Throughout the year small classical groups will be created for extra performances. These will most often be by invitation. However, if you wish to create one come talk to Mr. Vorwald and he will help you out!
NYSSMA- If you wish to perform a NYSSMA solo, duet, etc. let Mr. Vorwald know as soon as possible. Good NYSSMA scores help you get into All-County, All-State, look great on college resumes and are a must for anyone planning on majoring in music in college.
All County- To participate in All-County you need a recommendation from Mr. Vorwald. This recommendation does not guarantee your participation in the group.

Equipment
School instruments will be checked out during the first full week of school. Students in need of a school instrument will bring home a loan contract that will need to be returned before the instrument is used. Every student who uses a school instrument whether at home or at school will be responsible for that instrument while it is in his or her possession.
Many cases look the same, please, please, please make sure you have a clearly written name tag on your instrument!!!!
Students will need to provide some equipment of their own in order to be successful and prepared for class. This can all be acquired at any music store, or on the Internet at www.wwandbw.com. These items will be discussed in lessons as needs are specific to each student.
